From a mom of special needs, for a mom of special needs
I am a mother to three incredible kids. My precious toddler remains undiagnosed but is significantly delayed. Being his mama has given me the firsthand experience of the joy, challenges, and unique experiences that come with raising a child who doesn’t fit the typical mold. Navigating the world with a child who has special needs is an incredible journey, filled with moments that deserve to be celebrated and cherished. That’s why I’m passionate about creating a safe, welcoming space for families with special needs through my photography.
This Is A Safe Space for Every Family
From one special needs mom to another, I want you to know that you’ve found a safe space here. My sessions are more than just an opportunity to capture beautiful images—they’re a celebration of your child’s quirks, differences, and individuality. I focus on connection, absolutely not someone else's standard of perfection. I understand that every child is unique, and I promise to embrace that wholeheartedly. Whether your little one has cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, or is still on their diagnostic journey, like my own son, their story is beautiful and deserves to be told.
Perhaps one of the most important skills I’ve learned as a mother and photographer, is the value of patience and understanding. I know that special needs children often require a little extra time, and that’s perfectly okay. My sessions are designed to be flexible and accommodating I want to ensure that your child feels comfortable and happy. We’ll move at their pace, taking breaks whenever needed, and I’ll be there every step of the way to provide support and encouragement.
Accessible Locations
Finding the right location for a photo session can be challenging, especially when accessibility is a concern. When you book a session with me, I send over an in depth questionnaire. This questionnaire asks things like, "Does your child respond better to visual or audible stimulants?" It also goes over things like if your child uses a mobility device like a wheelchair, walker/gait trainer and asks if they are walkers or not.
These questions are not something I honestly would have ever considered before, but all the more reason why I feel such a connection with the babes with special needs. Because I DO ask those questions. Because I truly get it and understand. And this is why I take the time to scout out locations that are not only beautiful but also accessible for all abilities. Whether it’s a serene park, a picturesque lakeside, or a blooming meadow, we’ll find the perfect spot where your child can explore and enjoy the surroundings comfortably.
Keeping a child’s attention during a photo session can be tricky, but it’s also a fun challenge that I’m more than prepared for. Back to that questionnaire I mentioned above, I bring along a variety of light up and sound toys to capture attention in hopes your kiddo will let those priceless smiles and giggles sneak out.
From colorful bubbles to twinkling lights, a puppy dog attached to my lens, light up sphere, and a ridiculous squawking rubber chicken - these little tools are here to help create a playful and engaging environment where your child can truly shine.
I’ve had the ABSOLUTE honor of photographing some incredible children, each with their own story to tell. There’s the energetic boy with cerebral palsy whose determination and spirit are nothing short of inspiring.
The beautiful little girl with Down Syndrome who radiates pure joy with every smile. And my own son, who brings light and love into our lives every single day. Each time I get to photograph one of these amazing kiddos, I feel my my heart grow.
These stories are a testament to the strength, resilience, and beauty of special needs families, and I’m committed to capturing these moments authentically and lovingly.
